The recent discussion about the Roman Empire has been amusing to watch. As a former classics major, my own perspective is skewed, but I hope that others will look at the time, its heroes and villains, and its enduring lessons, as in this essay.

Also, I like the painting I chose for this one, picturing the emperor Honorius paying more attention to his pigeons than to his people. Makes me think of another self-absorbed bird brain...
