Keep the drama on the page. In the music, etc. Novelist Barry Gifford had some things to say along these lines (if only I could find them...) about how his books are all craziness and wild, but he's been happily married for decades and decades, lives a normal life. But when he writes, that's where all the stuff that is churning inside gets channeled into. Great advice here.

"keep the drama on the page" is a great line I'm borrowing this one

I believe people should rightly find whatever meaning they want in song lyrics and that most likely the artists would cherish that as well. Pretty sure Reznor was finishing up a stint in rehab and is reflecting on the new monotony of sobriety. “Sometimes I think I’m happy here… if I still pretend”. Good album. Thoughtful post, thanks.

I think the thing that separates career artists from people who aren't able to maintain on a longer timeline is finding a rhythm and having some kind of routine. Chaos might work when you're just getting started, but eventually it becomes unreliable and you end up having to put yourself in bad situations just to be creative which is less and less cute the older you get.

So I get this email, forgetting that I actually subscribed to Hot Takes. I read the first couple lines and I’m like what the heck, where did this come from? Close the email, but it was nagging me because I saw this thing about process and arrested development.

So I go back to it and read the whole article, and it’s like damn. That’s where I’m at. Pretty much stuck between all the creative urges pulling at me in a million directions and the structured state. I been there before, but we’ll try it out differently this time.

Instead of just adding structure, I’m going to be conscious about what changed and take stock of how it makes me better.

Sometimes you need to slow down to speed up.

Good article. It definitely has me thinking.

💯 Although it took me a lot longer than my twenties to get beyond that phase, I've settled into this more productive mode most days. Somedays, not so much. My nature abhors routine, so I work to develop habits that don't require an active choice to maintain—they just happen, like breathing. Maybe in my sixth decade, I won't be an agent of chaos in my own life. 😅
